AXLE / DRIVESHAFT REPAIR

A drive shaft (alsa propeller shaft) is a long rod, designed for transmitting torque in the rear wheel drive, four wheeled drive, or all wheel drives from the power output shaft of the transmission to the rear differential.

The inner end of a power shaft is often connected with the transmission and the universal (U-joint) connects with the differential.

For a four-wheel drive or a wheel drive vehicle, you can find that it actually has two distinct drive shafts, one for forward power transmission and the other for back power transmission.

Signs of a poor drivetrain/drive shaft

Vibrations from beneath the vehicle : An intense shaking coming from beneath the vehicle is a common symptom of a failing driveshaft. U-joints or bushings that are worn out can exacerbate the driveshaft to vibrate. It can lead to further damage to other drivetrain components if you don’t get the u-joints or bushings serviced. Please note that tire issues can also cause problems with vibration, but it’s easy to tell them apart. While driveshaft vibrations are not, vibrations caused by tire balance problems are speed sensitive.

The Turning Problem : You have a problem with your drive shaft when you try to make a turn with your car and the wheels don’t turn immediately or they feel obliged. The tires will have a great deal of resistance that you will sense when you attempt to make a turn.

This is undoubtedly a major problem that requires to be checked at right away. If it is merely hard to turn your steering wheel, you may need to take a look at the power steering pump.

Universal Joint Movement: If the drive shaft’s U-joint changes direction too quickly or fails to rotate, then it’s a drive shaft problem. The bearings’ cap seals may have rust on them. It is not stable either that or the u-joint itself. In this case, you will need to get your drive shaft replaced so you can’t drive your car.

Clunking Noise : Can you hear a clunking noise when you accelerate your vehicle? What about when you position the car in reverse or even drive in reverse?

In either of these situations, if you hear clunking noises, then it could mean that your drive shaft has a problem and should be examined promptly. This is also a prevalent indication of a weak slip yoke.

Squeaking Noise : If you drive and hear a squeaky noise from underneath your car regularly, it is a warning that your drive shaft might be defective. It may be out of alignment or it might be worn out in another section of it.
